Today I saw a tiny black mouse on the subway with giant bat-like ears. I watched it play with a little soup cup for about ten minutes. The cup was laying on it’s side so that the mouse could climb in. After doing so, it began to move around in it as if it were a vehicle. The mouse would go back and forth along the floor-changing directions whenever it met an obstacle. Twice, it tried and failed to climb on top of it only to end up on it’s back as the cup rolled onto itself. Eventually, it rolled the cup against the trolley track, thus preventing the cup from rolling any further. Once it did this, the mouse climbed on top of it and sat for about twenty or thirty seconds only to hop off and runaway. This was quite possibly the most connected I have ever felt to a city-dwelling creature and easily one of the cutest things I have ever witnessed.
